IUD replacement

All you need to know ...

Please ensure you can feel the IUD strings

  • If your old IUD has expired and you require a replacement (new IUD), please ensure you can feel the IUD strings inside

  • If you can feel the IUD strings, it will be able to be removed in the rooms and a new IUD inserted at the same appointment.

  • If you cannot feel the strings, you will probably require a general anaesthetic &  to have it removed

Insertion day What to do

  • Schedule your insertion appointment for days 1-7 of your menstrual cycle. Ideally you are bleeding on day of insertion.

  • Take pain medication 30 minutes before your appointment (e.g., 2 Panadol & 2 Nurofen).

  • Bring a referral from your GP, your pelvic ultrasound report (we can provide a referral if needed), your Mirena or Copper IUD, Medicare and credit card.

  • Have someone accompany you, to drive you home for rest afterward.

3

During Insertion of IUD

  • The procedure typically lasts around 20 minutes.

  • It's akin to a cervical screening test with three cramps.

  • Discomfort is often described as cramping: the first when the cervix is stabilized, the second when the uterus is measured, and the third during IUD insertion.

  • Most rate the pain as 5-6/10.

  • Most people resume normal duties immediately

4

After Insertion of IUD

  • Pain medication may be needed for up to a week post-insertion.

  • Avoid submerging your body in water, including baths, spas, or swimming, for 4 weeks.

  • Contraceptive effectiveness begins after 4 weeks.

  • Refrain from sex or using tampons for 4 days post-insertion.

  • Resume all activities at your own comfort level.

  • Expect irregular bleeding for 4-6 months.

  • Monthly string checks by you are necessary to ensure proper positioning.
